Music Therapy Interactive Logbook

developing a data analysis system for music therapists

What is the Music Therapy Interactive Logbook?

A system for recording, storing and analyzing music data from music therapy sessions. Music therapists will be able to write and store session notes alongside recordings. MT logbook will have the capacity to quantify musical events from stored audio files. The purpose of the system is to help therapists meet regulatory requirements for evidence based practice.

Who Are We?

A multi-disciplinary team of researchers from; the department of Electronics  University of York, Centre for Digital Music Queen Mary University of London, department of Clinical Physics Pinderfields Hospital Wakefield and music therapists registered with the Health Professions Council UK.

Why Are We Doing It?

We want children, young people and adults to have better access to music therapy. A computer aided tool will help deliver evidence of changes in a patient’s use of music; changes that can indicate increased attention, concentration, awareness and communication. By providing clear evidence of the benefits of music therapy, music therapy provision is likely to increase across the UK and internationally.

How Far have We Got?

We’ve developed a prototype recording system and decided on foundation analysis tasks. We’ve tested these out on music files we recorded from simulated music therapy sessions, based on real music therapy events. We’ve demonstrated how music information retrieval can be applied to the analysis of music therapy recordings.

What Are We Doing Next?

We are testing our first prototype system in the field with music therapists, learning more about what they need and modifying the system to meet those needs. Over the next few months music therapists will be using the MT Logbook prototype to record their sessions so we can develop more detailed analysis tasks for a computer to deliver.

Want To Help?

If you want to test out our system please let us know. The contact details are on the left of this page. If you want to support the research in some other way we’d be happy to hear from you.
